Choosing the Right Wax — A Guide to Clean, Conscious Candle Burning

Not all wax is created equal. And not all candles are as safe or sustainable as they seem.

In fact, most candles on the market are made with paraffin wax, a cheap byproduct of petroleum that can release toxic compounds when burned. Even high-end candle brands often rely on it — prioritizing burn time over air quality.

At DARY LIVING, we believe candles should be good for your home, good for your health, and good for the planet. That’s why we use only clean-burning, natural waxes — developed through a collaborative process between Moroccan artisans and a master French waxmaker.

The Hidden Dangers of Paraffin Wax

Paraffin wax is derived from crude oil. When burned, it can release harmful compounds like:

  • Benzene

  • Toluene

  • Formaldehyde

These are known carcinogens — and while they may be present in small amounts, exposure over time (especially in enclosed spaces) is not ideal.

Yet most commercial candles — even luxury ones — still use paraffin because:

  • It’s cheap and widely available

  • It holds scent for longer in storage

  • It has a slow, even burn

But here’s the thing: slower burn ≠ safer burn.

Our Clean Wax Blends — Designed to Burn Beautifully

At DARY LIVING, we’ve developed a custom wax blend that combines:

  • Coconut wax — clean-burning, slow-melting, holds scent beautifully

  • Sunflower wax — locally sourced in Morocco, great structure and stability

  • Optional beeswax — available in select blends for customers who prefer it

Each candle is hand-poured (or hand-filled, in the case of sand wax), and each refill is:

  • Free from paraffin, palm oil, phthalates, and synthetic dyes

  • Colored with natural pigments

  • Made in small batches for maximum freshness

Different candle vessels call for different wax types. That’s why we offer three unique options:

🟡 Sand Wax

  • Granular, pourable, and easy to reuse

  • Great for guests or daily rituals

  • Works beautifully in wide-mouthed pots like Nora or tagines

🟠 Liquid Wax

  • Long-lasting, ideal for restaurants, hotels, or events

  • Burn-safe and easily refillable

  • Used in our Flambeau modular collection

🔮 Gel Wax

  • Transparent, sculptural, and biodegradable

  • Ideal for glass vessels like our Solune Collection
